57 file papers for polls

Altogether 57 candidates have filed their nominations for the six Lok Sabha seats in Assam that goes to poll during the first phase.

Altogether 57 candidates have filed their nominations for the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam that goes to poll during the first phase on April 20.

Election office sources said today that the highest number of 16 candidates have filed their nominations for the Gauhati Parliamentary constituency, followed by 12 in Dhubri, nine in Barpeta, eight in Mangaldoi and six each in Kokrajahr (ST) and Tezpur constituency.

Yesterday was the last day for filing of nomination for the first phase of election.

In Guwahati, the key players are Dr Bhupen Hazarika of BJP, Kirip Chaliha of Congress and Bhrigu Phukan of AGP. The Trinamul Gana Parishad, Samata Party, Loka Jana Shakti and Samajwadi Party have also fielded candidates for this key constituency while the rest are all independents.

In Dhubri Parliamentary constituency, the Congress has nominated Anowar Hussain while the AGP has put up Afzalur Rehman and the BJP its sole woman candidate Jabeen Borbhuyan while the rest are all independents.

The prominent among the independents is former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta's wife Jayashree Goswami Mahanta who has been expelled from AGP for contesting against the party's official candidate.
