A pedestrian was mowed down beyond recognition by a number of vehicles on the Gurgaon Expressway on Monday. A series of vehicles ran over the woman one by one probably because of poor visibility due to the fog in the morning, police officials said.

In another tragic example of the fatal absence of pedestrian safety on the expressway —highlighted by Hindustan Times over the past year — mangled parts of the victim’s body were spread all over on the expressway.

The accident took place around 8 am when the unidentified woman, probably a construction labourer or factory worker, was trying to cross the stretch between Atlas Chowk and Iffco Chowk.

Police officials said an unidentified speeding vehicle first hit the woman and sped away. After this, five more vehicles ran over her one after the other.

The body was so mutilated that it was beyond recognition. Police officials could not even estimate the victim’s age as she was soo badly mutilated by the vehicles.

"It was such a horrible sight on the expressway in the morning. It was beyond imagination. I saw the body parts of the accident victim all over the road and the vehicles were moving very slowly because of that. The scene created a huge and long jam on the expressway," said a motorist.
