Their only fault was that they had gone to lodge a counter FIR against the landlord. However, SHO Bhullan Yadav, reportedly lost his temper and ordered cops to canecharge them.
The complainants alleged that the SHO was favouring the landlord due to obvious reasons.
The women were tenants in a building and the landlord was issuing them threats to vacate the place for past four months. The SHO got a case registered on a fake complaint by the landlord two days back. However, the women claimed that they had been trying to lodge an FIR against the landlord for past one month.
Around 11 am a group of persons identified as Kanti, Bhola, Raju Kashyap, Ashish, Manu, Munni Devi, Asha, Chameli and others reached the Naka police station. They all are living as tenants in the different portions of a building at 289/95 at Pandariba locality for past several decades. Earlier, owners of the building were Nirmita Das and Tanmaya Das but they had sold the building to Gurbachan Singh alias Titu Sardar on June 12.
Since the tenants were not ready to vacate the rooms as a case was reportedly pending in the court, Titu had managed to get a case registered at the Naka police station against the tenants on November 6. Titu alleged that a few of the women tenants had stolen his belongings kept in a room.
On the other hand, the tenants were running from pillar to post to get an FIR lodged against Titu for threatening them with dire consequences if they did not vacate the building. However, no cognisance was taken on their complaint for past one month.
On Wednesday morning, the group of tenants reached straight to the SHO inquiring as how did he register a case against them and refused for one against the landlord earlier. A heated exchange occurred between the SHO and the people and the cop started hurling expletives at them.
The SHO said, “Kisi ki himmat nahi hai mujhe yahan se hatane ki. Koi mera kuch nahi bigad sakta.” (Nobody can remove him from this place or can initiate action against him)
Meanwhile, other local residents gathered outside the police station and the mob started raising slogans against the SHO staging a sit-in there. SHO Yadav, who already was irked at the tenants, asked the policemen to canecharge the agitators.
The policemen assaulted the women and other residents brutally forcing them to leave the police station premises.
