The mishap occurred near Karcham Wangto hydroelectricity project, being carried out by the Jaypee group.
“Around 7.45 a.m. huge boulders fell from the hill top and destroyed the huts on the banks of Sutlej, killing six and injuring several others. Two labourers are reported to be still missing,” said Kinnaur SP Yashbir Singh Pathania.
A contractor working for the Jaypee Group had hired the labourers. Pathania said the extent of devastation was over an area of 35 km.
While five of the victims were Nepalese labourers, the girl was the daughter of the owner of tin sheds housing labourers.
Pathania said, “The rescue work had to be done manually as the area has no road connectivity and JCBs could not reach there.”
One body was pulled out from the river while five others were extricated from the debris.
The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital, Rampur”.
