At present, the counting of ‘second preference’ of votes is going on at the Bar Council headquarters here.
On Monday, two candidates- Ram Babu Shandilya of Ghazipur district and Yogendra Pratap Singh of Faizabad were eliminated from the contest. The second preference of votes and subsequent thereof given to them were added in the votes of other candidates, who are in the fray. The lawyers across the State cast their votes in this election.
This process of elimination of candidates from contest will continue till 25 members are left and these 25 candidates will be declared as ‘elected candidates’. These 25 lawyers are elected for a period of five years.
These 25 elected members will elect the chairman and vice-chairman from among themselves, who will hold office for a period of one year.
To recall, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh is the apex body of the lawyers in the State. It enroles lawyers, takes disciplinary action against them in case of proved misconduct, formulates welfare policies for them and assesses standard of legal education in the State etc.
According to the secretary of the Bar Council PN Tyagi, the counting of votes will be resumed on January 8.
Meanwhile, several candidates have expressed their resentment over the slow process of counting. According them the counting began on August 25. Four months have passed since then, yet there is no chance of completion of counting process.
The candidates alleged that several long breaks, like present one, are delaying the counting process.
However, some candidates, on the condition of anonymity, said that the term of the present chairman of the Bar Council was going to expire on January 12.
As the present returning officer is hand in glove with the chairman, he wants to extend the counting process till the chairman completes his term on January 12, they alleged.
According to sources, the Bar Council in a meeting has resolved that the present chairman of the Bar Council will continue to hold office till the completion of counting process and the fresh election of 25 Bar Council Members.
Some members said that this resolution was not sound. They demanded that there should be fresh election after the completion of the term of the present chairman in January.
According to them, the next chairman should continue to hold office till the completion of the present counting process.
