Mohanty, who resigned on March 15 as state law minister after his daughter-in-law lodged a dowry harassment complaint against him, his wife, son, daughter and son-in-law, was not seen in public since then.

“They were arrested early in the morning from a place in Howrah district of West Bengal by a team of Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) of Odisha police,” crime branch and HRPC additional director general BK Sharma told reporters in Cuttack.

Mohanty and his wife were brought back to Odisha’s Balasore town, about 200 km east of Bhubaneswar and produced before a sub-divisional magistrate court that sent them to judicial custody till April 2.

Following his arrest, the ruling Biju Janata Dal removed him as vice-president of the party.
