Head priest of Gorakhnath temple Mahant Avaidhyanath said Makar Sankranti would be celebrated from the morning of January 14 till late night. He said various religious functions at Gorakhnath temple would continue for one month and people would partake of khichdi. Various cultural and religious programmes would be organised during the celebration.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Arvind Kumar reviewed preparations on the law and order front in the districts of Gorakhpur and Basti division. He directed officials to maintain vigil during sacrifice of animals. He also directed municipal corporation officials to deploy a special squad for disposing of animal waste from the city soon after performing qurbani. District magistrate Dr Hariom and SSP BB Bakshi said meetings of local people would be organised at different police station and police officials maintain vigil in sensitive areas. Meanwhile, the stalls of sewai and the market of goats and other animals were set up in various localities.
