Speaking at a poll rally, Dy PM said voting should be made compulsory for all citizens for the good of the nation and the democracy.

Referring to the indifference of a section of the people in the country towards elections, Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani on Thursday said in Dewas that he sometimes felt that voting should be made compulsory.

Speaking at an election public meeting, he said that there were people who indulged in debates -- this party is good, that is bad, this politician is good, that politician is not, and so many other things related to democracy. But when the time came for voting, they chose not to cast their votes, he added.

Advani said sometimes he thought voting should be compulsory in the country -- like Australia and Italy where keeping away from the democratic process invited fines. Compulsory voting might cause minor problems to some people, but it would ultimately be good for the country and the democracy.

However, he added that this was an issue that could be taken up later.
