The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday said former BJP president LK Advani should 'not go' for the parikrama that the Sankaracharya of Dwarka Peeth is contemplating at Ayodhya.

Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Sarswati, who was in the past critical of the VHP's Ram temple movement, had said recently that he would undertake the programme on December 2.

Advani said after that he would join the Sankaracharya on the programme while the RSS had reportedly nodded its approval.

"He should not go", VHP President Ashok Singhal said when asked about the matter at a press conference in New Delhi.

Singhal, however, made it clear that the VHP was with the BJP on the issue of compulsory rendering of the national song Vande Mataram in schools.

Describing its opposition by some Muslim leaders as an affront to the Constitution, he said Bajrang Dal volunteers would try to persuade school and college students to sing the national song on September 7, its centenary celebration day.
