Chaudhary, son of civil aviation minister Ajit Singh, was caught on camera accepting around Rs 71,000 in cash on Sunday evening at a public meeting organised in support of Megh Shyam Singh, Congress-RLD candidate from Goverdhan assembly seat.

Chaudhary denied it was a violation of model code. He contended there was a provision for accepting contribution to candidates for election purposes.

"Candidates can raise money from supporters," said Om Prakash Chautala, Chaudhary's election agent. "The money was given for election management by party supporters and due formalities were observed."

A reply to the EC notice is being filed, he added.

"The notice was issued on Sunday night after the matter came to the notice of the EC," said Mathura district magistrate NG Ravi Kumar.

"Prima facie, such a transaction is not invalid, but no proper information was furnished on where the money was deposited and for what purpose," he said.
