An Iranian airliner caught fire on landing in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Friday, killing at least 80 passengers, state television reported.

The Russian-made Tupolev, which was on an internal flight from the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, suffered a tyre burst on landing and swerved off the runway before hitting nearby barriers and bursting into flames, the television said.

There were 148 passengers on board the flight, the television said, adding that some survivors had escaped without life-threatening injuries.
