A 20-year-old airhostess with Jet Airways allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of a building in Powai in the northern suburbs of Mumbai at 3.30 a.m. on Wednesday after a spat with her boyfriend.
Airhostess Anupama Acharya reportedly flew into a rage after an ugly quarrel with her boyfriend, Samar Yajurvedi, 24, when he objected to her wish to smoke a cigarette.
Acharya and Yajurvedi, both natives of Hubli in Karnataka, knew each other well and were planning to get married soon, said a police source who did not want to be named.
Acharya called her boyfriend, a co-pilot with Jet Airways, to her flat after she was upset over missing her flight on Tuesday.
“The duo then went to a multiplex in Goregaon and watched the film 13-B,” said Senior Inspector Rajdoot Rupvate of the Powai police station. After this they went to Yajurvedi’s flat in Powai, which he shares with two others, for drinks.
One of his flatmates, Martin Verghese, who was with the couple on Tuesday night, told HT their drinking session lasted till around 2 a.m. Acharya, who was reportedly high by then, wanted to smoke. Yajurvedi objected and offered to get her an auto-rickshaw so that she could go home.
“This led to an argument between them and turned into a big quarrel lasting about an hour-and-a-half,” said Martin, who was present at the drinking session.
Yajurvedi said in his statement to the police that after his failure to control Acharya’s temper, he called up her father, who asked her to cool down. This further infuriated her and she jumped off the building, the police source said. She died on the spot.
