Dr Karan Singh's son, Ajatshatru Singh, contested the Assembly polls on a National Conference (NC) ticket in 1996. He joined the cabinet headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah in October 1996. Ajatshatru feels it is time to end the family feud.

In a change from his father Maharaja Hari Singh's policy, Karan Singh had taken a step ahead by accepting to work as Sadr-e-Riyasat under Sheikh Abdullah and associating himself with Nehru for whom the he nursed a deep, everlasting admiration. His son, Ajatshatru seems to have gone a step further. Ajatshatru Singh contested the Assembly polls on a National Conference (NC) ticket in 1996.

Ajatshatru feels it is time to end the family feud. Elected to Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Nagrota constituency, he joined cabinet headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah in October 1996. His first portfolio was Tourism, Sports and Youth Affairs and his current portfolio is Information and transport.
