"The Governor expressed his anguish when Chief Minister K Rosaiah apprised him, over phone, of the prevailing situation in the state on Thursday," Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy said.

Briefing newsmen at the end of a high-level review meeting on the law and order situation, Reddy said the Chief Minister has directed the police to be "uncompromising" on maintaining peace and law and order situation in the state.

"This is an issue (creation of a separate state) that is not in the hands of the state government. There is no objection if anyone carries out an agitation in a peaceful manner," the minister said.

Though the Chief Minister has asked the police to observe utmost restrain, particularly while dealing with student protesters, they had to resort to lathicharge on a few occasions as the situation went out of hand, she said. Referring to the incident in Osmania University here on Thursday, where TDP MLAs Nagam Janardhana Reddy and E Dayakar Rao were attacked by irate mob, the minister said it was the handiwork of unsocial elements and not the students.

"The OU students themselves admitted that some outsiders sneaked into their premises," she pointed out.
