The state's information and public relations minister will be the chairman of the four-member committee, said an official statement issued in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Other members include Leeladhar Rao, an NRI based in the US, and Afsar Faheem, an NRI in the Gulf.

The panel will initiate an extensive study of issues affecting NRIs, collect and analyse data on the demography of NRIs from Andhra Pradesh, their sources of income, spending trends, savings and specific needs.

It will also study Kerala's NRI cell and ministry and evaluate how best it would meet the needs of NRIs from Andra Pradesh.

The group will liaison with government departments like industries, finance and education and explore the possibility of joint efforts to resolve issues.

The panel will initiate an awareness campaign among NRIs on the importance of savings and investment.

It will work with financial and insurance institutions to evolve a pension and insurance scheme for NRIs returning home and will initiate dialogue with central and state authorities for creating an NRI economic zone.

The statement said it was brought to the notice of the government that about 3.5 million NRIs in the Gulf faced a lot of problems as they lacked job security and a majority of them belonged to the middle class and poor families.
