In yet another case of ‘honour killing’ in Punjab, a 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her father who was against her relationship with a boy in Jagraon district, police said on Wednesday.
Nirmal Singh, who was in an inebriated state, shot dead his daughter Inderjot Kaur with his licenced weapon on Monday in Maherana Kalan village as he felt her relationship with Beant Singh had brought “disgrace” to the family.
The father, who was acquitted after being tried in a murder case, has been arrested on murder charges.
Inderjot Kaur and Beant Singh had fallen in love two years ago and subsequently eloped from the village but recently returned after staying in foreign countries.
Though the mother and brother of the girl accepted the relationship, Nirmal Singh was opposed to it.
The couple was living together, but their marriage was not solemnised as the girl was a minor, the FIR said.
This is the second incident of ‘honour killing’ in as many months. Last month, a newly married couple was shot dead by the family of the 19-year-old girl is Thatha village in Tarn Taran district.
