Police said Srikant Sharma, a bank officer in Chattisgarh, and his family had come to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh for the wedding of his sister. The family was returning to Chattisgarh after the wedding.

The family was travelling in an SUV on its way to the Delhi airport in the wee hours of Tuesday. The complainant told the police that armed dacoits in a four wheeler appeared on the Faridabad-Gurgaon road and looted the family at gun point.

The gun-wielding dacoits allegedly hit some of the family members, including Sharma’s parents, with the butt of the guns apart from looting some cash, jewellery and some valuable items including ATM cards, mobile phones, the complainant told the police.

The victims reported the matter at the toll plaza near Bhandwari on Faridabad-Gurgaon road and the police officials from Manger and Surajkund rushed to the spot. But the dacoits had fled by then. A case of dacoity was registered against unknown persons and efforts were made to nab the accused.

The dacoits, the police said, were possibly following this family and overtook them near a petrol pump on Faridabad-Gurgaon road by flashing a gun. The family was left with no option but to stop their vehicle.

Police said during the early hours, traffic is generally less and that could have helped the dacoits in executing their plan.

“We are investigating all angles of the case,” a police officer said.
