Rescue teams that reached the crash spot, near the village of Karyotissa west of the northern port city of Thessaloniki, recovered all four bodies, police said.

The helicopter had taken off on a training flight from a military base at Alexandria, in the Imathia region of northern Greece at 7.30 pm on Monday and vanished from radar screens around 8.10 pm, police said.

Defence Minister Evangelos Meimarakis cut short a visit to the northwestern town of Ioannina to rush to the crash site, together with army officers.

An army official said the helicopter appeared to have suffered engine failure.
