Army jawan accidentally shot dead by colleague

An army jawan was accidentally shot dead by his colleague at the Base Hospital in Assam's Sonitpur district today, police said.

Havildar Mani Ram, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead by Havildar Rajnandan Singh, also posted at the hospital, when his 9 mm carbine went off accidentally.

Singh, who hails from Bihar, has been taken into police custody while Mani Ram's body has been sent for postmortem, police said.

Defence sources said an inquiry is on into the incident.
