Talking to HT over phone, Surjeet Singh, who was released by Pakistan last year after three decades, said, “Inmates do not attack like this. It is a planned attack and ISI is behind this.”

“Ever since (Ajmal) Kasab (26/11 Mumbai attack convict) and Afzal Guru were hanged by India, many agencies were targeting Sarabjit.”

Gopal Dass, who was released by Pakistan after 27 years and had spent time in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail where Sarabjit is lodged, said, “Attack on Sarbjit is the handiwork of some terrorist outfit.”

Dass, who was also nabbed in Pakistan on charges of spying, lashed out at the Indian government for its alleged failure in taking up the matter of Sarabjit’s safety with Pakistan government forcefully.

Punjab’s deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal said the attack on Sarabjit was “most unfortunate”.
