Avalanche hits north Kashmir, 200 rescued

Police in Kashmir has rescued 130 people in north Kashmir's Kupwara district after an avalanche hits a mountain pass. According to police avalanche hit the Sadna Pass area on Kupwara-Tangdhar road in north Kashmir due to heavy snow fall on Monday.

According to police avalanche hit the Sadna Pass area on Kupwara-Tangdhar road in north Kashmir due to heavy snow fall on Monday.


"Nearly 200 people got trapped after the avalanche hit the road at Sadna Pass which connects Tangdhar (border town) with Kupwara,'' said a police spokesman in Srinagar.
``In a night long rescue operation police, Army and civil administration rescued about 200 people who had got stranded due to bad weather and landslides on Kupwara-Karnah road last night near Sadnah top. The stranded passengers included women, children and old people boarding in about 25 Tata Sumos and Tata mobiles have been rescued and sent to their respective destinations,'' police said.
According to police the stranded also included an injured person who was being carried in an ambulance . `` These vehicles got stranded because of the landslides and bad weather on Monday evening,'' he added .


The rescue operation was jointly conducted by army and police.
