UNION POWER Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was not only a leader of Dalits but also a source of inspiration for every individual of this country. He said Babasaheb was a versatile genius who had a good command of economics and family planning. Shinde made this remark at a function held at the Lucknow University to unveil a statue of Ambedkar here on Friday.

The minister further said,  “Contemporary society must stop criticising the people of new generation. It is not a good thing to unnecessarily criticise the people of Generation Y.” He called upon youths to face challenges with courage and cited his own example to prove his point. “I was a peon at a Sholapur court.

But from there, I went up to becoming Chief Minister of Maharashtra,” he said.

Showering praise upon Dr Ambedkar, he said, “Babasaheb himself faced a lot of difficulties, but while drafting the Constitution, he ensured that people of independent India do not have to face those difficulties which he had to face.

Thus, provisions have been made for free and compulsory education for every child up to 14 years.”

Speaking on the occasion, UP Governor TV Rajeswar said though Ambedkar hailed from a poor family, he reached great heights. “While drafting the Constitution, Babasaheb ensured that every individual gets equal opportunity,” the Governor said.

Joint secretary, Ministry of Power Harish Chandra said, “Dr Ambedkar promoted scientific temperament and other thought-provoking views of Lord Buddha among the masses. It was Ambedkar who advocated for social democratic revolution.”

Lucknow University vice-chancellor RP Singh, who also spoke on the occasion, said there was a bust of Babasaheb on the campus but the present statue was installed keeping in view the demand for a big statue. Speaking at another function, Shinde said without reservation in the private sector uplift of Dalits was not possible.
