Sogi alias Gurnam Singh allegedly masterminded the abortive bid to eliminate former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and former state DGP KPS Gill in 2001.

His areas of operation were the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Canada from where he was arrested.

Gurdaspur SSP PS Umranangal told reporters that Sogi, 45, had joined terrorist ranks in 1984 when he came to India from Doha where he was employed in a private firm.

In 1994, he went back to Doha where he managed to get a visa for England, the SSP said adding in the UK, he was allegedly involved in collection of funds for family members of terrorists.

Later, Sogi went to Pakistan and aided and abetted terrorism in Punjab from there, he said.

From there, he went to Canada where he was arrested and handed over to the IB under the extradition treaty signed between Canada and India.

Umrananagal said Sogi's interrogation had revealed that he had links with Jagtar Singh Hawara who was allegedly involved in former Chief Minister Beant Singh's assassination.
