Here’s how to keep your infant safe and secure wherever you might be by Veenu Singh.india Updated: Apr 04, 2009 17:05 IST
Your little bundle of joy will take no time to turn into an unmanageable brat requiring constant monitoring. And this can be quite a job as the child’s inquisitiveness will push him / her to places in the house that could prove to be dangerous.
“My eight-month-old daughter has just started crawling and I really wish I had an extra pair of hands and an extra set of eyes or at least CCTV to ensure that she doesn’t go around poking her fingers into plug points or falling off chairs,” says visibly hassled mother Amrita Dhatt.
Well, CCTV might be a bit much, but several manufacturers of baby and home products have developed products that can help keep children safe. “With nuclear families becoming a norm, parents are dependent on these safety devices to make their home and surroundings as child-friendly as possible,” says Satish Sundra of Ram Chander & Sons, the oldest toy shop in Delhi.
Check out a few options.

Baby’s day out
Weekends can be perfect for parents to take the baby out. But then carrying the baby in your arms can be quite a task – and a little dangerous if you’re shopping and have big bags. The baby carrier is an easy and safe way to carry your child, either facing you or facing out. Take a ride
Car seats are a comfortable and safe way of ensuring that infants and toddlers are safe in a car. Since they come with seat belts, they are definitely a better option than holding the child in your lap. Priced at Rs 6,995, you can find car seats at Mothercare at Rajouri and Saket, Delhi and Juhu, Mumbai.
Furniture with sharp edges and kitchen or bathroom slabs can be dangerous. To keep them safe, use corner cushions. Some are self adhesive, while with others, you have to use a sponge to cover the edge and then clip them on. Available at Mothercare, Juhu, Mumbai; Rajouri Garden and Saket, Delhi. Rs 195 for four pieces.
Keep them away
Keeping an eye on a crawling baby or one that has just started walking can be a big task in itself, especially if you have power points at a low level. Use socket covers to ensure that your little one is safe from any calamity. Available at all electrical shops and at Mothercare too. Rs 20 to Rs 100.
You don’t need to worry about the baby when you’re in another room. Just switch on the baby monitor and keep the receiver with you. Whether you are cooking or working on your computer, you will definitely hear the baby’s cry when he/she wakes up. At Ram Chander& Sons, Delhi; Mothercare, Delhi & Mumbai; Lifestyle. Rs 1,995 up.
