The candidates’ supporters had made elaborate arrangements for taking out parades on the link roads but bad weather forced them to cancel their plan.

On the other hand, the district administration had taken steps to avoid any unruly behaviour. Besides barricading the entry points to the colleges, the cops stationed there did not allow more than three students to go in.

As per directives, the three — candidate, one to propose the name and another to second the proposal — were allowed to go up to the office of the nomination officer. The nominations were for direct elections to the posts of president and secretary.

Earlier, students had elected candidates to the posts of vice president, joint secretary, treasurer and other office bearers.

The amendment in the student union election was following a court verdict and government directives. The modification aimed at making the elections economical and time consuming.

As per schedule, nomination process took place at VSSD, Mahila Mahavidyalaya and DG Girls’ College. Further, nominations were also held at the five colleges where it was suspended on Monday following Bismillah Khan’s death.

However, the police barricading at important crossings in the city, to control the students, created hurdles for the commuters. Diversion of the VIP road traffic to the court road caused bottlenecks that lasted for over an hour. Similarly, traffic came to a standstill on the roads in the Nawabganj and the Govind Nagar areas.
