Two teenaged students of a high school in Bangalore allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a tank after teachers admonished them for their poor academic performance, a top police official said.

The girls, studying in ninth standard of Mary Immaculate English School in Adugodi, have been identified as J Priyanka (16) and Sonali Gupta (15), Bangalore Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told reporters in Bangalore on Wednesday.

He said the girls reached Sankey tank, tied their hands up with the school uniform ties and jumped in.

The incident came to light on Tuesday, when the security guard called up police after noticing their abandoned bags, he said.

After a two-hour search, police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel fished out the bodies, Auradkar said. Family members of the deceased staged a protest outside the school, demanding legal action against its authorities.

"My daughter would always complain that her teachers pressured her. The authorities would insult them even in Parent-Teacher meeting," Bhagyalakshmi Janardhan, Priyanka's mother, said.

Gayathri, Priyanka's grandmother, demanded that the teachers be punished.

Harshita, school alumni, said the teachers were strict but was shocked over the students taking such drastic step.
