Ashiq Hussain Ganaie, General Secretary of Backward Classes Democratic Party (BDP), was arrested on Tuesday on charges of cheating Abdul Rashid Dar of Rs 1.25 lakh, they said.
Ganaie took money for the release of Dar's son Irshad Ahmad who is in police custody, they said.
He threatened Dar with dire consequences when the father demanded the money back after he failed to manage the son's release, they said.
An FIR has been lodged against Ganaie under sections 420, 506 and 386 of RPC, they added.
