Bhang for the buck

Now they want a trademark on bhang laced with chocolate. The buds and flowers of the female Cannabis Indica plant have gone into all sorts of recipes — from laddoos to papad to thandai — but no one has yet thought of marrying their virtues to those of the seeds of the Theobroma Cacao tree. The two extraordinary denizens of the plant kingdom grow in diametrically opposite parts of the world and Indians on either side of the globe were only too happy to seek nirvana with what they could lay their hands on. That the twain didn’t meet ere is a surprise though: the sun never set on an empire built by plucking alkaloids from one continent and growing them in another.
As cocktails go, this one should be right up there alongside the martini. A dash of the psychedelic tetrahydrocannabinol with a pinch of the pleasure-inducing phenethylamine is certainly more bhang for the buck. Both tickle the brain in their unique ways, and the lovely visions ought to only get lovelier. The side-effects, too, are impressive.
Add introspective hemp to the aphrodisiac chocolate and you have an entirely new class of soulful lovers — the choco-assassin.
Here’s wishing Chocolatier Scott J. Van Rixel all success with ‘Bhang: The Original Cannabis Chocolate’. If he gets a trademark in the US, his entrepreneurship will be justly rewarded. His is an idea whose time has come, although a few carpers would argue it’s a few centuries overdue.
