Santosh Kumar, a jawan of the Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) force, was attacked when he and his colleague Roop Narain Singh questioned three men in the S-7 bogey of the train at around 3am. Uma Shankar Singh, rail superintendent of police, Jamalpur, said the three men could have been criminals who planned to rob the train's passengers.

One of them fired at Kumar with a country-made pistol from close range when the train was travelling between Jamalpur and Dasrathpur sections under Danapur railway division of East Central Railway (ECR) zone, said Uma Shankar.

Kumar died instantly. Roop Narain Singh was shot at next but a metallic object in his pocket saved his life and injured him.

The assailants then pulled the emergency alarm and got off near Dasarthpur station. Uma Shankar has been admitted to a hospital in Lakhisarai, he said. A case has been registered with Jamalpur rail police and a search is on for the killers.
