A Naxalite from Bihar, wanted in a dozen of criminal cases including murder, was on Wednesday shot dead in a shootout with the police in Lahartara locality in Varanasi, a senior police official said.

The Naxalite, identified as Pappu Bind, along with an accomplice, was walking near the railway track in the wee hours when a police team challenged the duo to surrender, but they fired on the policemen leading to the encounter, Senior Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Pandey said.
Bind, a suspected member of the banned Naxal outfit MCC, was shot dead, while his aide managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness, he said.
He was carrying a reward of Rs 2,500 on his head and was wanted by the police in a dozen cases of extortion, loot, murder and other crimes, he said.
A carbine, a country made pistol and some cartridges were recovered from his possession, Pandey said.
