Amidst presence of heavy deployment of police force, the BJP activists burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. Enraged members of the party also burnt the flags of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress. Through an hour-long demonstration, police personnel restrained the BJP workers from resorting to cane-charge despite several provocations including a stray stone, hitting inspector Lakshman Rai.

Earlier, senior party leaders along with workers assembled at the party office at Shikshak Park and moved towards Collectorate in a procession. However, reaching Badachauraha, senior party leaders changed the plan all of a sudden and blocked the busy crossing by staging a sit-in. BJP workers blocked all four corners of the crossing leading to traffic jam.

Initially, police foiled the attempt of the BJP workers to burn the effigy of the CM. However, party workers dodged the police personnel by assembling at four corners of the crossing in groups. On the road leading to Meston Road, district president of the minority cell of the party Salis Beg along with his supporters burned the party flag of the SP. When police personnel rushed to snatch away the flag, a second group of party workers took the opportunity to burn the CM’s effigy. It was too late for the police by then, as the effigy was consigned to flames.

Later, addressing the gathering on the occasion, all senior party leaders accused the State Government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the city and State in general. They demanded dismissal of the State Government with immediate effect.

Senior party leaders Satyadeo Pauchari, Rakesh Sonkar, Radhey Shyam Pandey and party MLAs Satish Mahana and Salil Bishnoi speaking on the occasion accused the State Government of being hand-in-glove with criminals. Recent murders of traders and attack on them were some of the other issues raised on the occasion. The CM in particular was accused for having a biased approach towards the Kanpur city.

An hour-long agitation ended by handing over a seven-page memorandum to city magistrate Nirbhay Das to be forwarded to the Governor TV Rajeswar.
It was after a long time that both South and North city units of the party showed unity and were seen sharing one party programme.
