Welcoming the Supreme Court judgment on the MLAs of the breakaway group of BSP in UP, the BJP on Wednesday demanded imposition of President’s Rule in the state claiming that the situation indicated that the Mulayam Singh Government was in trouble.

"The BJP had demanded earlier too that President’s Rule be imposed in UP to ensure that free and fair elections are held in the state. We reiterate that demand. The Centre should now take stock of the situation in UP and take the initiative to bring it under President’s Rule," party spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy stated shortly after the Supreme Court delivered its judgment.

He said there was an "atmosphere of uncertainty" in the state and the SC judgement had imposed a responsibility on the Samajawadi Party-led Government which should now quit on its own.
