The party activists said the incident had exposed the "moral degradation of the ministers". Protests were held in Rajouri also.

State vice-president of the BJP Vibodh Gupta said that the minister had done a "shameless and heinous crime and should not be spared".

He also demanded action against police officials who did not register an FIR against the minister when approached by the victim.

"The women are not safe under the Congress and the National Conference rule in Jammu and Kashmir," said Vibodh, demanding immediate imposition of the governor's rule.

Activists of the National Panthers Party also held protest demonstration and burnt an effigy of the minister.

However, the Rajouri unit of the Congress said that the allegations levelled against the minister were "baseless and smacked of a conspiracy".

District Congress president Abdul Rashid Saini and vice-president Kamal Bakshi demanded a CBI inquiry, saying only a CBI inquiry would bring out the truth.
