BJP and Akali Dal activists clashed on the eve of Punjab panchayat samiti and zila parishad polls at Tarn Taran late on Sunday, leaving at least 10 workers of the saffron party injured.

The clash broke out after a verbal duel between BJP MLA from Amritsar (North) Anil Joshi and SAD MLA from Tarn Taran Harmeet Singh Sandhu. Akali activists then allegedly opened fire at BJP activists which left at least ten BJP members injured, police sources said.

Akali activists then allegedly set ablaze the brand new sports utility vehicle of Joshi in the presence of police officials.

Joshi alleged that Sandhu and his supporter's fired indiscriminately at BJP activists besides damaging 12 vehicles belonging to them.

Deputy Inspector General (border range Amritsar) Parmpal Singh Sidhu said a case has been registered against Akali activists, including Sandhu, but no arrests will be made till an inquiry by senior police officials is completed.

Terming the incident as "unfortunate", BJP Punjab affairs in-charge Balbir Punj, who is presently in Bhubaneswar, urged the Punjab Government to ensure justice for the victims.

"We have taken a serious view of the violence committed by SAD workers and will take up the matter with the Chief Minister very soon", Punj said, adding the party would organize a meeting of the state leadership tomorrow to finalise the party's strategy.
