BMC to file FIRs

BHOPAL MUNICIPAL Corporation (BMC) authorities have stepped up efforts to check the problem of cheque bounce. Now, the civic authorities would file FIRs under the Negotiable Instruments Act against the taxpayers whose cheques have bounced.

BHOPAL MUNICIPAL Corporation (BMC) authorities have stepped up efforts to check the problem of cheque bounce. Now, the civic authorities would file FIRs under the Negotiable Instruments Act against the taxpayers whose cheques have bounced.

Sources said that the BMC administration has decided to take legal recourse against the defaulters, whose cheques have bounced. Some of the cases of cheque bounce are as old as of year 1998.

These bounced cheques are not only related to the local taxes, but also of the amount deposited by the contractors against the allotment of parking stand or tehbazari. However, the BMC officials at zonal and ward offices have shelved such cases.
Surprisingly, the amount of cheque, which later bounced, was already considered as ‘deposited’ in some of the cases according to BMC records.

Apparently, the BMC officials credited the cheque amount in the BMC records even before the bank clearance. So, such taxpayers could not be included in the list of defaulters.

The BMC administration is also considering taking police action against such officials. Till mid 2005, the cheques worth Rs 10.22 lakh deposited by the taxpayers
