A bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax forced the adjournment of the Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly on Friday.

The police made a thorough search of the premises.

Congress party legislator G Chinna Reddy initiated the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address after the tea break.

But a few minutes later Speaker KR Suresh Reddy announced the adjournment of the house for another tea break, taking members, the media and the officials completely by surprise.

As Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, leader of the opposition N Chandrababu Naidu and other members returned to their chambers, the police swung into action with the bomb disposal squad.

A thorough search of the premises for 30 minutes yielded nothing.

The assembly proceedings resumed later. Police said an anonymous caller had informed the police control room that a bomb had been planted in the assembly building.

The police informed the speaker, who adjourned the house to enable them to search the premises.

"The police did not want to take any chance and hence the building was vacated and a thorough search was conducted," said E Pratap Reddy, a legislator of the Congress party.
