Revenue officials said the boy was admitted to a private hospital at Ramanathapuram where his condition worsened on Wednesday. Later he was shifted to a hospital in Madurai.

However, the boy's father did not admit him there as he did not have the money and took him back to Mandapam, where he died, Ramanathapuram fishermen's association president S P Royappan said.

Health department officials said three persons, including a woman, had symptoms of dengue in Ramanathapuram district and effective steps had been taken to contain the mosquito menace.
