It wasn’t their caste but money in their bank accounts that was the catalyst in the murder of Manoj Kumar (25), allegedly by the family of the girl he was in love with.

Kumar’s elder brother Sudhir claimed that the family of his brother’s girlfriend did not accept their relationship because his brother worked as a labourer, while the girl was pursuing her graduation.

Sudhir claimed that his brother was killed by the family of the 21-year-old girl in Lakhan village in Pilkhuwa town of Ghaziabad on Sunday night. The police found Kumar’s bruised body from near the girl’s village on Monday.

“On Sunday evening, her family members called my brother to their village but he did not go. They then abducted my brother and took him to their village and battered him to death,” Sudhir Kumar alleged.

Police said the deceased and the girl had been seeing each other for the last two years but the girl’s family did not approve of the relationship.

Kumar’s family had lodged a complaint against the girl’s father Het Ram, sister-in-law Sarita Kumari and brother Joginder Kumar, Pilkhuwa Station Officer S.C. Belwal said.

SSP Raghubir Lal said the girl had called Kumar to her house on Sunday night and later her family members caught both of them in an “objectionable state”. The girl’s family claimed that they beat up Kumar suspecting him to be a thief.

The police have detained the girl’s father and sister-in-law.
