McCullum was given a place in Test cricket at the expense of of Robbie Hart. He made is place in the squad after an outstanding show at the International level.

He proved himself as a capable batsmen by dominating the opposition attack.
His keeping skills are not excellent but is appreciable and good. He is in direct competetion with Chris Nevin for the keeper's slot in the team.
Belonging to a cricketing family, his father Stuart served as a former wicket-keeper and brother Nathan both played at first-class level.
His age gives him an edge over other players as he has many years to play for his country. He is widely regarded as a player New Zealand hope to base their side around over the next decade.
