Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has cut tariffs for fixed line telecom services by effecting a 28% reduction in monthly rentals. Under the scheme, BSNL has cut the monthly rental to Rs 180 from the Rs 250 in urban areas and Rs 210 in rural areas. “Subscribers will be saving up to 28% in the effective monthly bills,” chairman and MD A.K. BSNL also launched a pre-paid card with lifetime validity for Rs 949 which includes preloaded talk time of Rs 99. The local call rates under pre-paid card would be Rs 1.60 per minute within BSNL network and Rs 2 to other networks.

For STD calls, the call rates would be Rs 2.40 within BSNL and Rs 3 to other networks, Sinha added.

Also, Airtel has offered discounted rates of Rs 7.99 per minute for customers calling Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong between January 1-7, 2006.

Hutch has also offered users a Rs 2006 recharge coupon that gives them one-year validity and full talk time equal to the cost exclusive of service tax.

Meanwhile, Tata Indicom enlarged its two-year incoming free for pre-paid subscribers to the entire lifetime without having to recharge. This comes after all major operators have offered similar schemes to counter Tata Indicom’s highly successful two-year validity scheme.
