THE Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is geared up after launching its broadband service in the city to keep pace with the global trends in providing connectivity based on latest technology.
Significantly, the city has been selected among the 40 top cities in the country where the High Speed Broad Band facility is given. As a result demand of increase in basic telephone connection has also shot up in the city. For the first time in India, the field trial of the broadband system was successfully carried out in Kolkata last year.
The users can go for shopping through this service. They may book orders from the shop concerned and materials would be delivered at home.
Nearly 2,500 connections have been given during past nine months in the city and demand for more connections is on rise. Deputy GM Shayam Babu said that having a basic telephone was necessary for broadband connections. Considering the demands, BSNL has prepared itself to provide more landline connections.
BSNL GM, P K Srivasatava, told HT Allahabad Live that broadband referred to a connection that had capacity to transmit large amount of data at high speed. Currently a connection having download speeds of 256 kbps or more was classified as broadband.
When connected to the Internet such a connection allows surfing or downloading much faster than a dial-up or any other narrowband connection. Since there is no requirement for dial-up, a customer wouldn't get a bill for the use of internet.
Importantly, this facility assures unlimited usage of internet for a fixed amount of tariff. The internet connection is always on.
A broadband service facilitates multiple telecom services through a single copper cable interface. The broadband package includes services like telephone, satellite TV channels, internet, Video on Demand (VoD), Audio on Demand (AoD) and video conferencing.
Video on Demand enables a customer to view movies of choice. A customer can choose from a large pool of movies that are stored in a central server. The movies can be seen either on a television or a personal computer.
The cable channels that are presently available through cable TV operators, can be accessed through broadband connection in the city area. Besides the present channels, one can also view additional ones, relevant to science and education.
