"The formal notification for the by-election would be issued May 4," said Sanjeev Ranjan, chief electoral officer of Tripura.
The prestigious assembly constituency was left vacant following the death of sitting Congress legislator and former Tripura chief minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder January 4.
Both ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and opposition Congress have been trying to wrest the politically important assembly seat in the Tripura capital Agartala.
