As soon as a 26-year-old call centre employee — escorted by two security guards — unlocked her Mira Road apartment, her boyfriend jumped out and stabbed her twice.
Aquinas Martis (24) then stabbed himself in the abdomen.
Paloma Fernandes died while she was being taken to hospital. Martis has been admitted to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli.
Fernandes, who was from Goa, worked in a call centre in Malad and lived alone in Rashmi Hetal Co-op Housing Society. Martis stays in a separate building in the same complex. Martis and Fernandes had been seeing each other for a year.
“Martis got angry after Paloma complained to his father about her missing debit card. She had accused Martis, who was unemployed, of stealing it,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Shashikant Mahavarkar (Thane Rural).
The Mira Road police said Fernandes had returned home at 3.30 am on Wednesday. Her building security guards — Shailendra Singh and Mohan Yadav — escorted her to her flat. Just when Fernandes unlocked the door, Martis, who was hiding near the staircase, pounced on her. He whipped out a kitchen knife and stabbed her, then stabbed himself.
Fernandes’s screams woke the neighbours, including Martis’s father. They took her to Bhakti Vedant Hospital in Mira Road, but she died on the way.
“Aquinas’s father is a retired man and he has two brothers ,” Singh said.
“Earlier, Aquinas had withdrawn money from her account without asking her. Aquinas had been involved in an accident case a couple of years ago when he crushed an old woman speeding on the motorcycle,” said Police Inspector Mustaq Sheikh.
