A car bomb attack near a service station killed at least 23 people in Baghdad's Shiite district of Sadr City on Saturday, as Sunnis began observing Ramadan, a police officer from the district said.

At least 28 people were injured in the blast, the officer added.

The Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, which begins Sunday for Shiites, has been characterised by a spike of violence in Iraq in the past few years.
