The carcass of the 50-ft long cachalot, weighing five tonnes, was found on Tuesday morning wrapped in a net usually used in Sri Lanka, they said.
According to the officials, the whale would have banged itself against some rock as it could not swim after getting trapped in the net.
The officials said they would bury the carcass in the sea shore and after some months take out the skeleton to put for display in museum.
District Forest Officer Tirunavukarasu claimed in last 20 years, no whale of this size has been washed ashore in Rameswaram.
The officials said the whale could be of the type normally found in deep waters off Australian coast.
