Career with good looks, a gateway to success

‘BEAUTY LIES in the eyes of the beholder’, an adage firmly believed in and conceptualised by girls till late 80s, is all set to be replaced by today’s girls with ‘You-should-look-beautiful-if-you-are-one’. Career for girls two decades back, if at all they had it in their mind, dominated everything unlike today’s girls who carry their career along with the desire to look beautiful.

It is career along with good looks, which is becoming a gateway to emancipation of women power for girls of the 21st century.
Now, charming personality is considered to be quintessential for a successful career.
Shikha, daughter of Jyotirmayee Tripathi, a reader in the English Department of Juhari Devi Girls PG College, says: “We should maintain ourselves along with building our career.”
In contrast, her mother said she wanted career only nothing else and she hardly paid any attention towards her looks. Similar is the view of Dr Sushila Misra, a colleague of Tripathi. It was her career which did not give her time to think about other things.
But, for today’s generation, the thinking pattern has changed.
Shweta Bhatt, a student of BA-I at the same college, wants to do her PhD, and as she looks pretty, she does not need to work on her appearance. Whereas Babita, a student of BA-II of the same college, says girls are conscious of their looks rather than career as they want to grab attention.
However, she adds, “Girls who are conscious of their career only never pay attention towards their appearance.”
Dr Poornima Tripathi, Head of the Department Economics, SN Sen Degree College, said she was sure about her career but did not forget to maintain herself according to the needs.
“The older generation was crystal clear about their career and looks too,” said Dr Reeta Johri, a reader in the Zoology Department, DAV. She always wanted to maintain her own identity. Though it was a difficult job but with the support of her family, she was able to achieve her goal.
She feels that she has a great aesthetic sense to maintain her personality. “The way I present myself, students follow and I have to respect as well as maintain myself which is a God’s gift.”
Dr Rashmi Raizada, a reader in the Zoology Department at the same college, said that after completing MSc, she landed into teaching profession, gradually developed a liking for it and received full support from her family. She too favoured decent appearance rather than an awkward look.
Similarly, Mamta Yadav, a final year MSc (Physics) student at DAV, feels that decency and maturity count for good appearance. She wants to become a lecturer.
However, for Soni Dubey, a BA II student of the SN Sen College, maintaining herself is of prime importance.
She also wants to do something in life like others but knows that circumstances will not allow her to opt for a job. “So, marriage is the only option left for me,” she added.
