Cartoon row: Muslim sects ready for February 19 demo

THE OUTRAGE over Prophet Mohammed’s cartoon and the UPA Government’s vote in favour of the UN resolution against Iran has brought the religious leaders of the two sects of the Muslim community on a platform.

Calls of support from various religious seminaries are pouring in even as Muslim clergy has launched a door-to-door campaign in the city to drum up support for the February 19 protest demonstration. “We are getting phone calls from prominent religious leaders and caretakers of religious shrines from all over the country. Maulana Syed Mohd Hashmi of Kichaucha Sharief called up today to express solidarity with us on the issue,” said MA Siddiqui, the media in-charge of the proposed road show.

On Wednesday, Maulana Kalbe Jawad, Maulana Jehangir Alam Qasmi, Shah Fazlur Rehman Waizi Nadwi and MA Siddqui visited Sadar, Udai Ganj, Purana Qila, Bagh Aina Bibi Nai Basti localities to mobilize support. On the other hand, Ali Congress too extended support to the agitation plan and labeled the US a terrorist state.

In a statement, organization’s secretary Ghulam Abbas Abidi said that his outfit would participate in a similar demonstration organized by the Samajwadi Party here on February 18. He said a public meeting would be held in this connection at Imambara Sibtainabad on the same day.
