The students, one a first-year undergraduate and the other a year senior, were returning from a fair on Sunday in the morning when the two jawans, Atul Singh Bharati and Amar Kumar, started shadowing them.

"Two persons were following us when my friend and I were returning in my scooter. They were abusing us. Then their language turned filthier. We got down from our two-wheeler and protested," said one of the girls.

The CISF jawans also stopped their motorbike.

"One tried to forcibly snatch the keys of the two-wheeler. I shouted when I was hurt," she said. The other girl was so shocked that she could not react.

Students, non-teaching employees and passers-by gathered at the spot and called police. After interrogation, police learnt they belonged to the CISF and were posted in Durgapur, Burdwan.

"We have arrested the two CISF jawans on charges of molestation following the complaint of the students of Visva-Bharati," said Birbhum police superintendent Nishad Pervez.
