Kansan village will soon have Gurgaon's first check dam. The forest department is carrying out a survey so that conservation of sub-soil water can be initiated.
According to the forest department, initially, there will be one check dam in the district, but if the result is positive, more dams will be constructed.
The purpose of these dams will be to collect rainwater, which will be gradually absorbed in the soil, thus raising the groundwater level, which is depleting.
"We are preparing the proposal and have started a survey in Kansan village to identify the right place," said MS Malik, deputy conservator, district forest department. He added, "The main reason for constructing the same is to conserve the sub-soil water. We are surveying the place where the dam can be constructed without affecting the vegetation and nearby industrial units."
Though the forest department has not announced when the project will be completed, they are planning to finish it in the next three months, so that it can be operational during the summer.
Jyoti Sharma, president of "Force", an NGO working on water-related issues said, "It is a good move and I hope that the forest department will construct the same wherever it is required."
