TENSION gripped Gola Bazar locality under Madanpur police station of Deoria and Sapha village under Ramkola police station of Kushinagar district after a clash between youths of two communities over the route of the Moharram procession.
The irate members of the minority community hurled stones at the police personnel and damaged the official jeep of station incharge of Madanpur.

Reacting to the incident, members of the other community ransacked the shops belonging to the minority community.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the area and the police arrested 11 persons in connection with the violence. Meanwhile, DIG BB Bakshi said that the situation was well under control and police patrolling had been intensified in sensitive areas.

According to reports, a tazia procession was being taken out on Thursday from Imam Chowk near the residence of vegetable seller Sultan. As the procession reached Jaiswal House, a member of the same village hurled a stone on the procession and triggered off the trouble. As the news spread in the town, members of both the communities hit the streets and raised slogans against each other.

Meanwhile, circle officer and police station incharge of Rudrapur rushed to the spot and resorted to mild force to disperse the mob. The SO and other police officials received minor injuries in the brickbatting and the officials’ jeep was damaged by the mob.

A blame game then started between members of both the communities . Sources said that there was a dispute over the route of the Moharram procession but it was settled in 1985. On Thursday, the Moharram procession was passing through the route decided upon earlier but the shed of the newly constructed house of Rajendra Kanu was creating a hindrance in the movement of the tazia, which caused tension.

Sources said the people of a particular community damaged the shed of Rajendra’s house, which caused tension in the area. Meanwhile, PAC has been deployed in the trouble-hit town and the situation was tense.

In another incident, tension gripped Sapha village under Ramkola police station of Kushinagar district when members of a particular community constructed a wall on the route of the Moharram procession. Though the police demolished the wall to clear the way for the procession, the incident caused serious resentment aming members of the other community. They hit the streets and raised slogans against the district administration. The police had a tough time controlling the situation.

Another incident of clash between members of the same community in Pipraich town of Gorakhpur district and the rumours which followed caused tension in the town. The members of the same community clashed in a bid to take lead in the procession. They beat up a youth while the police remained mute spectators.
